Frank’s great-grandmother, Luisa Garcia Cruz, ran a small eatery in 19th-century Navotas. She made delicious kare-kare and was called “Luisang Kari.” Later, his grandmother, Engracia “Asiang” Cruz Reyes, started one of the oldest restaurants in the Philippines. She is known as the “Mother of Filipino Cooking.”
